What is organic food?
Organic refers to growing agricultural products, aquatic products, and livestock products by using fertilizers and pesticides below the standard level. It is sometimes confused with grazing that is not kept in captivity, but grazing and organic farming are different. Since it does not use chemical fertilizers and pesticides, it gives consumers the impression that it is the right food, but it needs to be considered a little.
Is organic food safer?
It may be wrong to think that organic food is unconditionally safer, because not using chemicals does not mean there are no physical or biological hazards. Organic agricultural and livestock products are very susceptible to bacteria and infectious diseases, and the amount of toxins contained in plants can increase over generations. In other words, it is dangerous to equate the word organic with safe food. Rather, it can be seen that crops using pesticides distributed after undergoing thorough inspection are safer than organic. There are many pesticides used these days that are soluble in water, and some are low-toxic enough to not die even if you just drink the undiluted solution.
Since it is virtually impossible to grow crops without the use of pesticides at all, so-called natural pesticides are usually used in organic crops, which is far from the clean natural ingredients commonly thought of. The idea that natural pesticides are better stems from the false perception that artificial is dangerous and natural is good for the body. Copper sulfate, which is commonly found in school chemistry labs, is typically used as an organic pesticide because of its toxicity, and copper sulfate is treated as a naturally occurring component composed of sulfuric acid and copper ions, so it can be used in organic food.
Is organic food healthier?
Crops grown organically are generally more expensive than crops grown using pesticides and fertilizers. However, there is little difference in nutritional composition. There is no significant difference in the impact of being organic on human health. The image of the word organic itself and the vague resistance to the use of chemical fertilizers/pesticides are only the main factors that increase the demand for organic food. So if you don’t want to think deeply, just choose the one that suits your circumstances.
Is organic food environmentally friendly?
Organic and eco-friendly are two distinct areas. When looking at food packaging or advertisements, there are some cases where organic and eco-friendly are the same, but this is very different from the facts. Organic farming uses less than standard pesticides, so it is susceptible to pests and thus produces less. So, to produce the same amount of non-organic commodities, that much more land is needed, which in turn consumes more energy. For that reason, it is far from being eco-friendly.
