Evoluent VM4SW Vertical Mouse 4 Right Hand
The mouse is the most common tool used with a keyboard when using a computer. The problem, however, is that the typical type of mouse does not have such a desirable design from an ergonomic point of view. On the right hand side, when using the mouse, the thumb should point to the left while the palm should point down. In medical terms, this is called supination. However, this posture basically twists the bones that make up the wrist arms. If you maintain this position for a long time, it can cause stress to the wrists and arms, and in severe cases, it can progress to carpal tunnel syndrome.
While I was also using the mouse to feel pain in my wrist, I searched for a vertical mouse in the hope that I would not let it go. It can be said that the basic principle of a vertical mouse is to reduce the amount of hand twisting so that the wrist is less stressed. After investigating a number of vertical mice on the market, the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4, known as the most representative and highly rated product, was purchased.
Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 is available in a combination of small / regular, right / left and wired / wireless mice. The wireless mouse is further divided into a USB receiver type and a Bluetooth type. The size, hand used, and wired / wireless can be purchased in different combinations. For example, a combination of ‘small size + left hand + wired’ or ‘regular size + right hand + wireless’ is possible. However, some combinations with low demand may not be available.
The full name of the product I purchased is ‘Evoluent VM4SW Vertical Mouse 4 Right Hand Ergonomic Mouse with Wireless Connection’. Evoluent is a trademark, VM is a Vertical Mouse, 4 is a fourth model, S is a small size, and W is Wireless, which means a wireless USB receiver.
In other words, VM4SW means a small-sized USB receiver type wireless. As another example, VM4S stands for small size wired and VM4RW stands for regular size USB receiver type wireless. VM4RB stands for regular size Bluetooth wireless, and Bluetooth wireless is only available in regular size, so there is no product called VM4RS on the market.
It should be considered that the regular size and small size are based on Westerners. If you are an Asian male and have large hands, you can choose a regular size, but if not, a smaller size would be a better choice.
Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 provides a satisfying experience in that the main reason to choose a vertical mouse is wrist pain relief. The pain in the wrist area felt when using a normal mouse was completely lost when using a vertical mouse.
Another advantage of the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 is the presence of additional buttons and the ability to personalize them. The Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 is equipped with two buttons and one wheel, which are found in a typical mouse, and additional buttons are installed. To customize the use of these buttons, you must install the software provided by the manufacturer.
After installing the Evoluent mouse driver, you can see the setting window as shown below. For reference, it is stated in advance that the description is based on the mouse for the right hand. In addition, the setting window in the figure below is set in accordance with my usage habits in a state that I am actually using.
As you can see in the picture, the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 is equipped with a total of six buttons, including a wheel. First, there are two buttons on the left side of the mouse that can be operated with your thumb. I use the top button in the middle of this thumb button to go back, and the bottom button to maximize the task pane. After maximizing, press the same button again to return to the original size.
And on the right side of the mouse, there are two buttons on the top and one on the bottom. I use the uppermost button for the left click of a normal mouse and the lowermost button for the right click of a normal mouse. And the button just below the wheel is used to minimize the window open on the screen. This minimization is very useful when you want to hide the screen immediately during work.
In addition to the six buttons, there are two separate buttons on the right side for adjusting the pointer speed. This button cannot be adjusted in the above setting window.
The battery used is one AA size. The battery can be inserted by opening the lid on the bottom of the mouse, leaving some space in the area. This space can be used to store the USB receiver when moving. There is a power switch right next to the place where the battery is put, and the size is rather small, but there is no inconvenience in practical use.
Overall, it is a solid design with dark curved lines. Such a design has the advantage of not getting tired even after long use. The most noticeable part of the appearance is the area where the thumb touches, which is painted with a mirror-like gloss. However, while using it for almost 3 years, the initial gloss does not disappear and remains smooth without any slight scratches even after repeated friction of the thumb on this area. This is a very satisfying part.
It was purchased in August 2017 and has been used steadily for less than three years. I dropped it on a hard floor from the height of the desk several times, but until now, it has no apparent damage or malfunction.
However, in some places, wear is observed, specifically, three parts can be selected. First, it is observed that the coating of the sharply protruding portion under the mouse button is slightly peeled off. Secondly, there are a total of 4 slips on the bottom of the mouse that touch the mouse pad, but there is also a little wear. Finally, there is a sponge-made part in the battery case for cushioning, and the sponge part wears out during the insertion and removal of the USB receiver. However, considering that they have continued to use for nearly three years, all three are considered to be inevitable wear and do not cause any major abnormalities in function.
If you are experiencing discomfort from wrist pain when using a mouse, it is highly recommended to use the vertical mouse, the most proven model, the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4. The price is somewhat expensive compared to other vertical mice, but users are convinced that it is worth it.
Hermitshell Travel Case Fits Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4
While using the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4, I was very satisfied with the device itself, but there was one complaint. That’s why there is no case to hold the mouse on the move. If the mouse is a general type, you can use a general-purpose case, but the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 is quite different in shape from other mice, so it was difficult to find a case to hold it.
Then I accidentally found a hard case for Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 on Amazon and bought it. The full name is’ Hermitshell Travel Case Fits Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 “Regular Size Right Hand Wireless VM4RW / VM4SW. The company Hermitshell makes a protective hard case for various consumer electronics products. This product is for wireless type. According to the name, not only the regular size, but also the VM4SW, or small size, is applicable, so I decided to purchase it.
This is a hard case-shaped mouse case that wraps the entire Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4. The inner surface made of soft fusion material can protect the stored mouse well.
I bought it because it is possible to use a small size based on a regular size, but if I put in a small size, there is some space left inside. However, when I insert the mouse, close the zipper, and shake it, there is no feeling that the mouse moves inside.
The product includes a silver carabiner (climbing hook), but it fits tightly when connected to the hook on the case body’s zipper handle. Therefore, it is better not to use it.
It has a black fabric structure that resembles carbon fiber. It also looks very hard.
It is a product belonging to the kind of hard case that does not distort its shape even when applied with strength. It is so hard that the shape does not deform even if it is moved with other objects in the bag.
If you’ve been using the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 and have had an uncomfortable experience on the go, it’s worth considering.
